As of November 2026, App Store Connect requires at least one screenshot per required device size. It accepts up to 10 per size in .jpeg, .jpg or .png with no alpha channel. Every iPhone app needs an iPhone with Dynamic Island (medium display) set. Every iPad app needs an iPad 13-inch set.

This guide is for iOS developers who own their listing. It gives the required sizes first, then the iPhone and iPad reference. It also covers file rules, where screenshots appear and how to fix a wrong-size error. All limits come from Apple's own pages.

What sizes are required?

Upload the required sets first. You can ship with only these when your interface scales cleanly across smaller devices.

Apple states the rule in its screenshot specifications. Provide at least one iPhone screenshot for iPhone with Dynamic Island (medium display). Provide at least one iPad 13-inch screenshot when your app supports iPadOS. If your interface is consistent across sizes and languages, provide only the highest resolution. App Store Connect scales it down for smaller displays.

Start with 1206 x 2622 for iPhone and 2064 x 2752 for iPad. These meet the required sections and scale down cleanly.

From April 2027, Apple adds one more required set. Apps built with the iOS 27.1 SDK or later need iPhone Duo screenshots. Use 1398 x 2034 for the outer display and 2007 x 2853 for the inner display in portrait, swapped in landscape. App Store Connect does not scale other iPhone sizes into the Duo section, so plan a separate export for it.

What are the iPhone and iPad sizes?

Use the display names App Store Connect shows today. Apple renamed the old inch names (6.9-inch, 6.5-inch, 6.3-inch) to display names, so match the section name, not an old blog table.

iPhone with Face ID (large display)1242 x 2688, 1284 x 27782688 x 1242, 2778 x 1284Required only when you do not provide the Dynamic Island large set

Older Home Button sizes (5.5-inch 1242 x 2208, 4.7-inch 750 x 1334 and earlier) still appear in Apple's table. You do not need to upload them when your app targets current devices. App Store Connect uses the scaled screenshots from the sets above.

Show the real iPad interface in the iPad set. Do not upload an iPhone file into an iPad section. The resolutions differ, and an iPhone file fails iPad validation.

Other platforms need their own sizes only when your app runs there. Mac accepts one 16:10 size (1280 x 800, 1440 x 900, 2560 x 1600 or 2880 x 1800). Apple TV accepts 1920 x 1080 or 3840 x 2160. Apple Vision Pro accepts 3840 x 2160. Apple Watch accepts one of six sizes (for example 422 x 514 for Ultra 4 and Ultra 3). Apple requires the same Watch size across every localization of your app.

What file rules apply?

Get the file right before you worry about design.

Screenshot file rules, as of November 2026.
RuleWhat Apple requires
CountAt least 1 and up to 10 per device size and per localization
Formats.jpeg, .jpg or .png only
TransparencyNo alpha channels or transparencies
ContentMust follow the App Store Review Guidelines
LocalizationRequired and localizable: one set per language you sell in

Apple lists these rules in its screenshot specifications and confirms the required and localizable status in platform version information. Screenshots sit at version level in App Store Connect, alongside App Preview, description and keywords. Like the promotional text and description rules, they ship with the version you submit.

Show real app UI from the current version. Do not show features, content or prices users will not find after install. Keep text overlays short, factual and readable at search size. Do not use other platforms' names, calls to download or rank claims in the images.

Where do screenshots appear?

Screenshots appear on your product page and, in a smaller form, in search. Apple shows the first one to three screenshots in search results when you have no app preview. Put the core value in the first frames (Apple's product page).

On the product page, screenshots sit below the app preview area and above the description. When your app supports Dark Mode, consider one screenshot that shows it, as Apple suggests.

Apple describes search placement in text terms. It says the keyword field that helps decide where your app appears in search works with your name, subtitle and category. Apple documents no keyword role for screenshots and no weighting for them in ranking. Treat screenshots as a conversion asset: they help a shopper who found you decide to install.

How do you fix a wrong-size error?

When App Store Connect says the dimensions are wrong, the file is often valid but sits in the wrong section. A 1320 x 2868 file belongs in iPhone with Dynamic Island (large display), not in the medium display section.

  1. Read the pixel size from the file itself, not from your design canvas.
  2. Open View All Sizes in App Store Connect and find the section whose accepted list contains that exact size.
  3. Move the file into that section and confirm the error clears.
  4. If no section accepts the size, re-export at one of the required sizes above and upload again.
  5. If a .png still fails, re-export without an alpha channel and upload again.

Check orientation too. Portrait and landscape swap width and height, and a portrait UI inside a landscape frame fails validation. Export landscape only when your app truly runs in landscape.

What this doesn't cover

This post covers still screenshots only. App previews are separate video assets with their own specs (up to three per localization and device size, up to 30 seconds each). Custom product pages and product page optimization tests use their own image rules. Google Play needs its own sizes; this post is App Store only.

Screenshots also do not replace text metadata. Name, subtitle, promotional text, description, keywords and What's New each have their own limits and version rules. Design polish (captions, story order, branding) matters for conversion, but Apple documents only the technical and content rules above.

FAQ

How many screenshots do I need for the App Store?

You need at least one screenshot per required device size, and you can upload up to 10 per size and per localization as of November 2026. Upload the iPhone medium set and, when your app runs on iPad, the iPad 13-inch set, and let Apple scale the rest.

What size should App Store screenshots be?

Use 1206 x 2622 portrait for iPhone with Dynamic Island (medium display) and 2064 x 2752 portrait for iPad 13-inch display as of November 2026. These are the required sections. Add Mac, TV, Vision Pro or Watch sizes only when your app runs on those platforms.

Can I use an iPhone screenshot for the iPad listing?

No. Upload a real iPad capture at an accepted iPad size. iPhone and iPad are separate device classes with different resolutions, and Apple requires a valid iPad set when your app runs on iPad.

Why does App Store Connect say my screenshot is the wrong size?

The file rarely has a random size. It usually sits in the wrong upload section. Open View All Sizes, match the file's exact pixels to the section that accepts them, and move it there or re-export at the section's size.
