Apple adds two further sentences worth holding onto. The omission that matters most: the long description is absent from Apple's list of text-relevance matches. Apple names title, subtitle, keywords and primary category. It does not name the description. The Five Things That Actually Move Rankings
1. Text relevance in four fields
Your title, subtitle, keyword field and primary category are the entire text surface Apple names. Three of them are tightly constrained: the app name must be "at least two characters and no more than 30 characters," the subtitle "can't be longer than 30 characters," and the keyword field is limited to 100 characters, comma-separated with no spaces (App Store Connect Help, Apple, App Store Product Page).

2. Primary category
Apple lists your primary category as a text-relevance match, alongside the three fields you agonise over. This is the most under-used line in Apple's documentation. Category is not just where you get browsed — it participates in search matching, and it also determines which peer group your performance is benchmarked against in App Store Connect.
Choosing the category where your app is genuinely the best fit — rather than the one that looks least crowded — is a ranking decision, not a filing decision.
3. Downloads
Apple names downloads as a user-behaviour input. This creates the cold-start problem every new app faces: you rank because people download, and people download because you rank. It is also why launch velocity gets so much attention, and why chasing a head term on day one is usually futile — you are asking the store to rank you above apps with years of accumulated behaviour on that exact query.
The practical response is not to fight it but to route around it: rank first for terms where the incumbents' behavioural advantage is small.
4. Ratings and reviews
Apple states these can influence ranking and that they appear in search results — so they hit visibility and conversion at the same time. A 4.7-star app with 900 ratings outranks and out-converts a 3.6-star app with 12,000 ratings in ways that compound.
The lever you control is when you ask. Apple provides a native rating prompt; use it after a moment of demonstrated value, not on second launch.
5. Conversion rate
Downloads are an input, and conversion rate is what turns impressions into downloads, so conversion feeds the ranking loop rather than sitting outside it. This is where your icon and first screenshots do their work — Apple notes that "the first one to three images appear in search results when no app preview is available," meaning your screenshots are competing in the results list before anyone opens your page.
Apple also gives you a free benchmark for this. What Is Folklore
The ASO field has accumulated a body of confident claims that Apple has never made. Some may be true. None are documented, and you should know which category you are operating in.
"Put keywords in your description." Apple's text-relevance list does not include the description. Treating it as an indexed field costs you nothing but the readability of the one piece of long-form copy a hesitant user actually reads.
"Repeat your best keyword across all three fields for extra weight." Apple's App Review Guideline 2.3.7 tells you not to "pack any of your metadata with trademarked terms, popular app names, pricing information, or other irrelevant phrases just to game the system," and Apple's keyword guidance explicitly lists duplicate words among the things not to use. Duplication is at best wasted characters out of a 100-character budget.
"Update your app frequently and the algorithm rewards you." Apple documents no freshness factor for App Store search ranking. Shipping updates is good for users, retention and reviews — all of which are documented inputs — but the update itself is not a stated ranking signal, and treating a version bump as an ASO tactic is cargo cult.
"This keyword has a difficulty score of 43." No third party has access to Apple's ranking systems or its query volumes. Every difficulty and volume number in every ASO tool is modelled from observable signals. That does not make them useless — it makes them relative instruments, useful for comparing two terms and unreliable as absolute values. ASO Starts Before the Metadata
The most common way to lose at ASO is to do all of it correctly inside a category that was never winnable.
If the five apps ranking for your main term all show tens of thousands of monthly downloads, thousands of ratings and active publishers, no arrangement of 160 characters will put a new app in front of them. That is not a metadata problem and no amount of subtitle rewriting fixes it.
